2005 Spring Conference & AGM
This year our AGM was incorporated into a Spring Conference. For the sixth year in succession we were treated by the generosity of Ernst & Young, to the wonderful surroundings of their Luton Offices for our gathering. Delicious food was provided at lunchtime by Eurest and we are extremely grateful to our accommodation and hospitality providers for their kindness. There were three invited speakers. The first, Dr Arturo Sala of the Institute of Child Health, talked about his research that is funded by the Society. This deals with the role of B-MYB oncogene in neuroblastoma. The second speaker, Dr Glenn Flux of the Royal Marsden Hospital, described his research (also funded by the Society) which looks at targeting radionuclide therapy for neuroblastoma. Our third speaker was a neuroblastoma survivor who was treated more than 30 years ago. Mik Scarlet, a journalist, actor and musician, demonstrates more lust for life from his wheelchair than many able-bodied people I have known. He related the years since his diagnosis during which time he has forged new entries for disabled people in many different spheres. His determination not to be suppressed by his illness and misfortune is a tonic to behold and he made us laugh with accounts of some of his highjinks. We followed with the Raffle Draw, then the business of our AGM and rounded off a thoroughly enjoyable sunny day with good food and wine and much chat and companionship. Antonya Cooper. April 2005
